Curly and Wavy Haircuts: Planning Shape and Movement
Curly and wavy haircuts need a plan for shrinkage, weight, and natural movement. Learn what to discuss before your barber starts cutting.
Premier Blends opens November 20, 2026. Shop visits, walk-in service and regular hours described in this guide begin on that date.
Talk about the curl pattern
Curly and wavy hair can change dramatically as it dries, so show your barber how it normally sits rather than describing it only when it is wet. Mention whether you wear it natural, brushed out, or stretched.
A few reference photos taken in similar conditions can clarify the desired shape. Your barber can then account for shrinkage and preserve the movement you like.
Build shape without removing all the weight
The goal is often a balanced outline with enough weight to keep curls together. Removing too much in one area can create unwanted volume or make the ends look disconnected as they spring up.
Layering, scissor work, and a controlled taper can all be useful, depending on density and length. Ask how the shape will change as the hair grows.
Keep the routine simple
A gentle cleanser, conditioner, and leave-in product may be enough for definition; aggressive brushing can disrupt the pattern. Apply product to damp hair and let it dry without repeatedly handling it.
If the scalp feels tight or the curls become brittle, reduce harsh washing and ask a qualified professional about persistent concerns. Styling advice should support the hair you have, not fight it.
